Environmental Safety Aspects of Agricultural Aviation

Introduction

Like all Americans, aerial applicators are concerned with human health, the environment, security and performing their job in a responsible manner. Pesticides and their timely application play an important role in protecting our environment, particularly with regard to the food and water supply, public health, natural resources, infrastructure and green spaces. The aerial application of pesticides accounts for almost 25 percent of commercial crop protection applications and is often the only and/or most economical method for timely pesticide application.

The Importance of Media and Public Relations

It is a challenge to get our positive message of protecting agriculture, forestry and public health to the public and the media, but the importance of it is clear. The media reaches the masses and the masses influence public policy.

NAAA Aerial Application Industry Surveys

NAAA periodically conducts Agricultural Aviation Surveys to collect information to better identify the scope of work the U.S. agricultural aviation industry performs and the equipment, products and application techniques the industry uses. Additionally, the information gathered helps NAAA in its efforts to maintain aerial uses on a number of crop protection product labels. Having valid data has resulted in saving products for aerial use because they have pointed to less actual risk compared to EPA’s theoretical risk assumptions.

FAA Releases Guidance on Marking MET Towers

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has released the long-awaited guidance for marking MET towers less than 200 feet above ground level (AGL) in remote and rural areas. NAAA is very pleased to report that the comments provided by members and the Association have yielded guidance favorable to agricultural aviation. The FAA agrees that marking these structures would enhance the conspicuity of these METs, particularly for low-level agricultural operations.”
