Delta State Receives $1.75 Million to Expand Agricultural Aviation Training
Delta State University will use $1.75 million in federal funding to help train the next generation of agricultural pilots through its Agricultural Aviation Operations Career Pathway program.
The funding was included in the FY2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill, signed into law in February. The investment will enhance Delta State’s specialized training pathway, which was created to address a growing national shortage of qualified agricultural pilots and support the long-term workforce needs of the agricultural industry.
Established through previous federal support, the program combines commercial and instrument flight training with specialized instruction in aerial application operations, agricultural safety, turbine aircraft systems, and precision application techniques. Delta State remains the only public university in Mississippi offering a comprehensive program focused specifically on agricultural aviation operations.
University leaders say the funding strengthens workforce development efforts while reinforcing the institution’s long-standing aviation tradition. Housed within the College of Business and Aviation, the program provides hands-on flight experience, industry mentorship, and targeted training designed to prepare graduates to enter the ag aviation workforce immediately.
Officials also credited U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (MS-R) for her support of the university’s agricultural aviation workforce development plan.
Graduates of the program go on to support agricultural producers across the Mississippi Delta and beyond, helping sustain farm production and strengthen rural economies. Watch the news story here.
